Events which unroll always show you that it's not what you think it is at the start and there's something new on the road to finding the truth of what it is. The style is good. The only drawback I have found was the attempt to visually describe some things and events, such as what's inside the longshot, the way they collided with the "shadow squares" and description of the first floating building they saw on the ringworld. The events which took place while drifting into the "eye of the storm" was confusing as well. Those descriptions were confusing, did not make any sense and I never understood them to judge their scientific accuracy. Nevertheless, I find the plot, the reactions among the crew members and the speculations about how civilizations rise and fall to be very realistic, though not concise.
In general, a good book to read.Christmas Snowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00272187289420166314noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3369127277021590195.post-12155663524459174132009-01-27T21:28:00.000+00:002009-01-27T21:28:00.000+00:00As you know, since you recently commented on my si...As you know, since you recently commented on my site, I just read Ringworld for the first time and really enjoyed it. I am not one to examine the 'science' in science fiction, not because I am not intelligent enough to do so but simply because for me novels are always about the story. When they happen to have interesting scientific concepts, more the better, but they don't have to be truly plausible to me...if they sound plausible that has always been enough.

I thought this was a pretty honest review. In reading it I get the impression that the major part of what Niven did here--the Ringworld--is what has stuck with you over the years and that alone is pretty amazing considering the age of the novel.

There are several science fiction novels from my childhood that are as exciting to me today as they were the first time I read them. I think that is in large part because I do not read them with a critical eye, I just enjoy revisiting them like old friends.

I have really only concentrated on 'the classics' for the last year and I have really been pleased overall with how much I have enjoyed reading them. It is a great way to connect with the stories that have influenced the more contemporary writers/stories that I enjoy.Carl V. In fact, according to the cover art of Juggler of Worlds on fantasticfiction.co.uk, the book is set "200 years before the discovery of ringworld".

I'm not sure what you mean by "nitpicky". I see no point in "reviewing" books uncritically - it's dishonest, for one thing. In my reviews, I describe my responses to the novel in question, and if I find some minor detail annoying then I'll say as much.Ian Saleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15375389971610069381noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3369127277021590195.post-23518587531817137832009-01-24T23:23:00.000+00:002009-01-24T23:23:00.000+00:00you forgot to mention the recent Fleet of Worlds a...you forgot to mention the recent Fleet of Worlds and Juggler of Worlds that Niven and Lerner collaborate on.

I just say that I think all of your critiques are nitpicky, and leave it at that.Crotchety Old Fanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02092745636011711266noreply@blogger.com
